Fresh on the heels of the recent ice storm to hit the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex, we have new article up: “Should You Insulate Your Foundation?” Here’s an excerpt:

An uninsulated foundation can result in a large heat loss from an otherwise tightly sealed, well-insulated house. It can also make below-grade rooms uncomfortable. Foundation insulation, on the other hand, can result in lower heating requirements, and also help avoid moisture condensation, which is often caused by the difference in temperature between the interior and the earth around the foundation. However, a foundation with a poorly designed insulation system can cause many problems such as radon infiltration, moisture problems, and insect infestation.

The economic benefits of insulating a foundation and having it done correctly depends on many things:

    * Is it new construction or retrofit?
* Are you planning to heat the lower level?
* Will you have radiant floor heating?
* What heating climate is the house in?
* Does the soil drain well?

A foundation is basically the root of a house. The house sits on the foundation, which, much like the roots of trees or plants, holds it in place.

There are two major types of foundations used today: Pier on beam, and slab.

Slab

First, is the slab (also called a slab-on-grade) foundation. As it sounds, a simple concrete slab is poured beneath the structure to give it a good sturdy base. This type, however, is not meant to keep the structure from moving laterally and vertically with the soil they sit on, it is meant to give the structure a good flooring, as so it can move as one structure, instead of breaking apart. This is a shallow foundation that will often shift around from season to season, being affected by water, and even by the root systems of local vegetation. Going on with the analogy to the root systems of plants, slab on grade foundations are like the root systems of grass, or small shrubbery. If the soil moves, they move, unharmed with it, by and large.

Pier and Beam foundation

These are deeper foundations (like the roots of a large tree) which are good for areas which are prone to snow and frost. The point of a pier and beam foundation is to sink below the frost line. Freezing and thawing soil tends to shift and, therefore possibly damaging shallower foundations. Unlike slab on grade foundations, this kind of foundation can include a basement. The frost line is usually between 5 and 8 feet below the surface. This type of foundation is occasionally subject to lateral damage, though, and the floor may shift.
